You need 40 profile tyres not 45 for them to defo fit without rubbing. I have 7.5 x17 with 205/40/17's lowered lots and no rubbing!
Not quite sure whether you are asking about 17 or 18's though? Dont go 18's anyway, they are too big a look a little silly IMO

nah not the 18" they got the info on da site mixed up but i will confirm they are 17" before i get em. so the 215/45/17 will rub on 17"'s... where can i get sum decent 215/40/17 tyers within the west midlands area, as im seeing silly prices.

Mytyres.co.uk - Im not sayin 45's will rub but you will run into problems if you lower it. Go for 215 or 205/ with a 40 profile and you'll be fine.

almost guaranteed to rub. 215's should have 35 profile on them.
you might get away with it if you get the 45 offset however. but the inner tyre could rub on the arch at that point.....

Yeah, was trying to think what 'Ceebubya' has on his 1.8T 9N. He's defo running 215 but as you say, must be a 35 not 40 profile, my error.

I suppose it depends on the lowering. you could probably get away with it on stock suspension (didn't some fella have 225s or something?!), but I wouldn't be keen on making the tyres over-wide.
the offset could help out in this case - but that will only exaggerate the tyre hitting the inner arch.
you never know for sure, but I would try to stick to 40 profile or lower for 215's, and then be careful with lowering. apart from rubbing you will have speedo issues too.

i ran 215/45/17 for 2 years, lowered 40mm and had no problems (apart from the little bolts in the arches which i removed)

them in bold wont work on the polo
need to be 5x100 and et35

is that because 45mm will rub on the inner arch, as I'd have thought 45 might be a better option to stop outer wheelarch rubbing....

IMO that's the perfect size for 17's, but other opinions do vary
