Broke down today

Well the Polo was hard to start this morning but it did go eventually. Engine cranked for ages before it sprang into life. Then about 5 mins from the house it struggled, no power at all. I pulled into the side of the road and the engine died!
I had to start it about another 10 times. Each time it caught it either cut out straight away or cut out when I pressed the accelerator. Once It did finally get going It behaved all day, No issues, just like normal.
Now it was damp this morning but the distrubutor cap is not cracked at all. I have looked about and cant see anything. I just don't want to repeat this again. I have had issues re starting on a damp morn but never lead to a stop before.
Anyone any Ideas?
