hi, i am a bit of a newbie when it comes to modifications. I have seen a lot about coilovers on this forum but not sure what they actually are.

Am i right in saying they are basically the same as lowering springs?

Basiclly, lowering springs mean you are at one height e.g. 50mm whereas with coilovers you can go from say 50mm down to 100mm.

So in a nutshell, springs are not adjustable, coilovers are

what height would you recommend.. bearing in mind i already have 17" alloys on it?

i was thinking somehwhere between 30mm and 40mm. Your thoughts please.

a coilover is an uprated shocker and uprated spring that can be height adjusted and some can have the shocker adjusted

a lowering spring is a smaller spring to what is standard on the car, generally the original shocker is left on the car.

springs are alot cheaper- under £100
coilovers are anything from £350 to £800
i lowered 40mm on springs on 17s and found that fine.
i am now lowered 80mm at least on coilovers on 15s and find that alot better personally as the ride is more sturdy

To be honest, its gonna be up to you as to how low you want to go. You need to consider practicality of being really low, what you want to achieve (looks or handling), budget etc etc. There is no real recommened height as you can go as low as you want with 17's (certainly you wont find springs only that will go so low it becomes undrivable).

If you get coilovers you wont need to worry as you can adjust them anyway!

Have a look through some pics of heights on diff. set ups, will prob give you a better idea of what you want to achieve.

50mm is a good compromise, coilovers are a better set up and adjustable. you get what you pay for, basically!

Any one know what these coilovers are like, 'Polo 9n EVO Coilovers'? Are they any good?reliable?

Is buying 2nd hand coilovers a good idea if they have been fitted and used, say for about a year?any risks?disadvantages?obviosly no advantages apart from price?

How long will coilovers last?What factors affect the life of them?

-2nd hand, good idea if they are cheap enough & depend on how many miles they have covered obviously as to whether they are shot or not!

Risks? No warranty, no come back if they are broken/ knackered.

To be honest as with anything in life, buy 2nd hand if you trust the seller to provide you with accurate info on the history of the item and relate that to the price they want for them.

As far as im aware, EVO are cheap and probably cheap for a reason, although I am not speaking from experience mind. You always get what you pay for.

Have a look over on clubpolo im sure ive read a bit about them or the similar Jamex ones on there?

I still have some GMAX -40 mm lowering springs for sale (They were on my car for a month or so...)

I loved these coilies! car handled like a dream too - mine are now provisionaly sold.

tbh, i couldnt ever justifying spending £500+ for a suspension setup on a polo 1.4.... its was never going to be going *that* fast or be hammered round a track to really push the suspention...

After using EVO on my 9n, i will DEFO be putting them on my Ibiza Mk3 Cupra. I receomend them highly.
