hmmmmm me thought i was clever klogs and decided to try and service the car myself. now im not jumping in completely blind here. I ahve serviced cars before, a while ago... with the help and aid of a proffesional mechanic. Ive seen it done a few times aswell.

Thing i wasnt to sure about was the order in which the leads go back on the dizzy. I did take some pics before i took ti off in case this happened but i didnt check the pics before i continued on and theyre not very clear.

Typical of me that is.

I put the new plugs and leads on, changed the oil filter and topped her up with new oil. All went well. Tried the engine and all i got was a boom from my backbox and a very stuttery engine that failed to start. Just whirred on the key.

Now why the hell would changing the plugs leads and oil result in the car failing to start like this? Whats really got me is that why did the backbox boom everytime i tried to start it up? Surely that would mean its overfuelling and i havnt touched anything to do with that, that i know off atleast.

The car is now standing up on the jacks outside my garage. i need to fix this today or else i am royally butt f****d for work and college.

Never again will i attempt anything ever i swear lol. Ok... thats a lie

Any way can anybody help????

I am going to put the old plugs and leads back on now and see how that makes a difference.

lol we all do lad... we all do.... lol.

Just tried old plugs, just chugged then died slowly. It must be firing otherwise it wouldnt chug at all. Im just hoping i aint fuc ked something major. I have no idea what couldve happened! Its just gone. Cant see any reason why. Unless i royally sodded something up when i tried to start it the first time with the leads on in a slightly pissed order?

I wub my car it was so mint till i touched it. Ill be totally boned without it.

Sounds like you've just messed up the firing order for the cylinders. I don't know if that can cause any damage. You'll need to get the leads plugged in in the correct order. Which engine have you got? Check the haynes manual if you've got one. It's probably running like a bag of sh*t cos there is at least 2 leads in the incorrect place. Basically it isn't sparking when the cylinder has the right fuel/air mix.

I had one lead/plug not giving a spark all the time and my car sounded like a V8, it was great fun, except it was losing power.

ok mate i've found this photo. it's from my old 1.3 but i would expect the leads will still be in the same position.

as they come out of the dizzy, they go into to plastic guide and out of view. the lead nearest the windscreen goes into the right-most cylinder (at the near end).

hope this helps fella.

aaahhh that photo may have helped greatly sadly the car is now dead... oh wait wrong word i meant alive :D

Phoned about to a few people and eventually got the rigth advice. The leads were indeed in the wrong order. After being told and jogging my memory it all came flooding back. The firing order is 1342 anti clockwise from 1. What a plank.

I did the same thing as you steveb at one point. it was popping and banging like a mad beast. thats when i phoned a mates dad (who i shouldve just phoned to begin with lol) and he told me straight.

Cars running like a dream now btw 8) so crisis averted. thanks to everyone who helped and tried to help its all very much appreciated!
