Car won't lock all the doors!

Post by KITT »

My 16v is having a bit of a problem with the central locking. If I push the plipper or turn the key in driver's door to lock the car it doesn't work. I can hear a wurring noise behind the petrol filler cap, which I guess is the central locking pump(?) but none of the doors will lock; I have to go round to each one (and the boot) to lock them.

Strangely, they will all unlock just fine with the plipper :?

Any ideas guys?

Im not entirely sure ..... But as the central locking has played up on me a few times.. I would say it sounds like a air pipe might be loose.

You might want to take the door car off and see if their is any loose pipes (passengers side) It sounds like your central locking pump is working which is a very good thing.

Have you changed your electric window mechanism recently?

don't know if the mk4 has solenoids as it's a vacuum system :S

I think it sounds like a loose air hose. mine used to play up around at the joint with the pump. use a bit of electrical tape to seal it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was having a play with it yesterday and I can sometimes make it lock everything by pulling the petrol cap slightly whilst the pump is wurring :? It seems the pin that locks the cap does slide across when I press the plipper. Is there some kind of air seal around that pin? All very odd!

check the air connection to teh petrol cap lock. if any pipe becomes disconnected there is no vaccume so wont unlock.

might be the convenience module. Mine was doing the same thing before i had my new alarm/immo fitted and the fella said it just needed resetting.

I don't know where it is or how you do it but it must be easy cos i only went for a pee and when i got back he'd fixed it!.

UPDATE

Post by KITT »

Hurray! Got it sorted :)

Traced the problem to the pneumatic actuator that locks the petrol cap. The pipe and connector were fine, but there's a rubber seal around the bit where the metal pin comes out of the actuator which had split. Some cunning use of insulation tape and a sandwich bag has re-sealed it so everything's working again :)

cheers

well done mate,

I however am having the worst time ever :(

Into VW I think - looking at a costly bill to:

a)get drivers door to open (somehow)
b)find out problem why wouldnt open in first place (including passenger inside handle) after locked and re-openned
c)repair what ever that problem is + parts

££££££££££££'s :(

What's up with yours bhp addict? Can you lock/unlock the driver's door with the key? Can you hear a pump wurring away in the boot when you turn the key in the lock?

Ok, from the top

Fixed window motor...closed door...locked car and went in house

Came out and opend doors (motor went+pins went up) drivers door refused to open....tried lock and re-open...no good...tried lock and re-open with key ....no good.......

Passenger side opend from out side so put mrs in car....locked car with fob again(motor went+pins went down)....car locked....opend with fob and drivers door still stayed cstuck closed and passenger was stuck from inside handle.....mrs couldnt get out but I could open passenger from outside............

Took 3 days to get in via drivers door (cut lock bolts in rear quarter panel)........fitted new door locks....tested 100 times.....closed doors and fob wouldnt lock or flash indicators.......locked with key..........opend with fob and guess what????????........doors were stuck again in exactly the same way.

Now the motor has stopped (think has emptied air out of system) neither key or fob locks all doors now....just the one I am at......no action at all on lock button......flash but no action from open button either.....

Only way in and out of car at this stage is passenger door from outside........central locking motor not working AT ALL (not even with internal buttons in drivers door)..........I fell like i have had nothing but problems and I am considering selling it to but a different one.

I am going to book into VW to have it sorted but worried at what it's going to cost me, car already cost me most of what I had........sold LCR for house and now seems like need to spen most of cash on GTi............not best impressed so far i must admit.....

Rant over.......sorry
