Couple of Mk2 problems.......

First one... speedo...
Original one was sticking so I've replaced with Coupe ones but the speedos not been right since.
Have got the one with 1578 on the dial so I know they are a straight swap but the speedo squeeks and is showing the wrong speed when I get past about 30mph. The pointer wobbles irratically and sometimes it is worse than at other times. ie: This morning I was doing about 40mph but the speedo was wavering around 60-70mph mark!!!!
Anyone know what's wrong? Is the speedo faulty and if so, is there a way to fix it? I've got a few speedos so I could use the bits from them if need be (but only one with 1578 on - not including the original that I removed of course but that doesn't have a trip counter on)
Secondly, have a bit of a problem with the rear suspension and need to know if it will pass its next MOT. If not, I'll need to get this done before it's next due. I noticed that when I was getting in and out of the car that it was making a slight noise (grinding) from the back.
On checking the suspension I've found that the rubber gaters inside the springs on the back suspension (that cover the shock absorbers) have corroded and are both splitting (the one on the driver side has split all around the bottom and the plastic tube attatched to it has come detatched and dropped down so I can see the shiny bar leading into the shock absorber. I'm assuming that these rubber gaters serve some sort of purpose (possibly stopping water from getting onto the shiny bar and into the absorber and this is why it's making a grinding noise??)
Is it hard to replace the shock absorbers if this needs doing?
TIA
