How do I adjust idle speed?

Can anyone explain to me how I adjust the idle speed of my Polo 1.2?
I seems to be a few hundred revs too low.
It's especially noticable when pulling away, or starting to reverse, as if you don't correct for the lows revs, it's easy to stall the car.
Is it something that's easy to adjust, or will I have to take it into the garage?
Any advice appreciated :)
Cheers

Ah, ok.
In that case, should I take it to the garage?
Somethings not quite right with it. There's also a belt slipping sound when you pull away, or accelerate from low revs.
