whining noise when driving

been getting a strange whining noise lately whilts driving.... difficul to explain but everytime i press the accelerator the noise becomes more apparent..... also noticed something odd when in 1st and 2nd gear.
basically imagine being in traffic and being stood still with the cluth pressed fully down and in 1st ready to get the bite and go
if i start moving forward (still in 1st) and then remove my foot off the clutch completely, and let the car slow down itself (as anyone normally would) i can hear the whining noise yet again, however the second the push the cluth fully in again, the noise disappears...
any idea on what the problem may be... noticed this happening for a few weeks now although hasnt affected performance or drive-ability in any way yet
any advice appreciated....

hmmm i was gonna say it could be a wheel bearing going until you said that the noise disappears when you put the clutch down! so not too sure what it could be mate, i'm sure someone will know on here tho!
just noticed that u have a cupra r splitter on the bottom of the gti splitter, never seen that done before!

100% gearbox going.....exactly what happened to me when my gearbox went, i would get it taken in and inspected ASAP as you may be able to salveage it before you start losing gears, girinding teeth off and eventually blowing your diff casing

Thats what happened to me!

But yest that is defo gearbox!!

i jus had a similar problem...everytime i accelerated or deccelerated, i would get the whining noise...
it turns out that it was the Power Steering Pump that was making all the noise, so i had that change and the noise has been gone since...so you
may want to look into that...
where are you hearing this noise from?..the front of the car?

cheers for the advice.... not so sure its the gearbox (hope not anyway)
as "officially_on_road" says, it get the noise when accelarating or decellarating.... no idea where the noise is coming from... its difficult to tell but its definately in the front half of the car.... how much the pump cost you anyway mate? is it a big job?
yep, thats the cupra-r splitter... was the gfirst one to have it (i think)

... until. the geezer who lives directly opposite me decided to copy the idea a few months later on his polo mk5

the power steering pump cost me £106 and my uncle fitted the part on...it took him about less than 1hour...
open up your bonnet, get someone to rev your engine so the noise is made and try to listen out for the sound coming from near the timimg belt tensioner and the alternator cos the power steering pump is below them...

if its the power steering pump it shouldnt have anything to do with acceleratin or decelleratin! To check the pump, turn the car on, open the bonnet and pull the steering to hard lock, if it is the power steering pump then it'll make a howling noise.
I'm fairly certain its your gearbox, the whining stops when you put the clutch in, the whyning gets louder as you accelerate and the lessens when the car decelleartes then it will be the box....that was my identical symptoms

Is it just a noise or does it vibrate at all while accelerating?

basically exactly whats happenging....
no vibrations at all, no sticky gears, crunches or anything, just the whirring noise at all time whilst driving, its more noticeable in higher revs (2500+)

exactly the problem, higher revs, the sound becomes more noticeable and much louder especially in gears 1, 2 and 3...but in 4th and 5th, the sound is still there but not as loud...

could be a few things, get the little thing checked first, realease bearing on the clutch, next will be your clutch/pedal box, then big thing GEARBOX LMAO ive had them all lol, whinning noise was exactly the same as yours, got the pedal box changed for a new one, still noise was there but the pedal box did need reaplcing as the pedal box is prone to cracking, then next a massive BANG sounded like a jumbo jet which was the gearbox, yup new gearbox time, well recon one, £565 inc labour and parts
