Someone told me that the clutch/ gear box for the 1.4 16v is apparently quite weak, it need replacement before 100,000 miles on the clock. Is this true? If so, what sort of mileage will the gear box or clutch gone? Sorry I am not very good at these mechanical side of issue. Many thanks for your comments. Cheers

Yeah its true they are fairly weak. I did thrash my 16v but my gearbox went after 65K miles!! one of the bearings went and shredded all inside!! got a replacement for fairly cheap, try cleckheaton gearboxes m8, theyre top notch. The 'boxes are reconditioned but my one works fine and have had no troubles as yet! way cheaper than brand new...
To be honest i wouldn't replace your gearbox unless ur getting troubles with it, hard to change gear or the crappy whirring sound of a bearing on its way out. I had a fairly stiff clutch so i got that replaced at the same time! Its up to you of course but £400ish quid is alot to spend if it isnt deffo needed! anyways hope that helps!

Many thanks for your help, Black16v. mine has only done 50k miles on the clock. So I just wondering whether it is worth keeping the car for another few years.. Want to be prepared what will go wrong soon...

50k? it should go for a few years yet i reckon, although u can never say for certain. As long as you dont rag your car as bad as i used to you should be fine! Ive had the gearbox go wrong, the back wiper doesnt work and the central locking f*cked up but decided to mend itself! Polos arent as hugely reliable as the german build indicates it should be, atleast thats what ive found, but as far as engine and stuff goes.......top notch! i mean you could have some french piece of crap.......i wont name makes and models!! All in all i'd say keep it for a few years and save up for something a bit meatier and sexier while ur at it............thats what im doing!

I agree. Properly our Polo are made in Spain. Thats why its not as good as the Golf or other VW models. To be fair, I dont rag my car really. I always driving it really sensibly, as I got points on my license so dont wanna lose my license

Anyway, I hope it will goes for few more years with trouble free motoring.. touch wood....
