OK so I've heard about 3 different types for the MK3 now (including the G40). I'm just wondering what the difference is. Can you anyone give me a rundown of the differences in the engine, i.e. the cam shaft etc?

I will do an engine tech spec faq, as it seems a lot of people are asking the differences between the engines.

That sound ok to you ?

well, all i no is:
1043cc engine which has a single point injection engine and 4 speed gear box (wot i currently have). although the the polo salon did have a 5 speed i am told!

1272cc engine which has a single point injection system and a 5 speed box

1272cc which is multipoint injection with a different 5 speed box (the GT)

1272cc which is multipoint injection system with a g-lader supercharger with a another different 5 speed box!(the G40)

the gt and g40 have rear anti roll bars whereas the others don't!
as far as i no the gt and g40 engines are basically the same except for the supercharger and gear box! . obviously the g40 has better brakes etc.

sorry that i can't give ya exact info as this woz off the top of my head! hope its of some help

to continue with doug&dan's reply:
With enginecodes:
AAU - 1050cc, 33KW/45HP with singlepoint injection (mono-motronic)
NZ - 1272cc, 40KW/55HP with multipoint injection (digijet)
AAV - 1272cc, 40KW/55HP with singlepoint injection (mono-motronic)
3F - 1272cc, 55KW/75HP with multipoint injection (digifant)
PY - 1272cc, 85KW/113HP with multipoint injection (digifant)
Gearboxes can be different depending on with model(C, CL, GT, G40) you have
Note: the AAV replaced the NZ engine a the end of 1992

Well I have still one engine left:
1W - 1.4L , 35KW/48HP, diesel

The AAV replaced the NZ at the end of '92? I thought that the AAV was available from the beginning - but maybe I'm wrong. I know my car had an AAV engine, but it's an August '92 car. In fact, the NZ over here seems to be rare - I don't think I've ever seen one first hand!

Shame we never got the diesel over here. Oh, and isn't the AAU 1043cc? :D

Well will those 7cc make a big difference in performance ??
I didn't know for sure if it was 1050cc or 1043cc :)

This is a list of some of the Polo engines that I created a while ago. It doesn't cover them all, just most of them. Might be of interest to someone?

@Gilex - if you're interested in the 3F injection I fitted to the AAV engine there's an article I wrote about it online here. It's not a great article, but it might be of interest?
