I have a 97P 1.4 it has done 126k, the gearbox has just finally given up and i need a new one quick and on the cheap. i will be fitting it myself.
First i need to source a 2nd hand gearbox, does anyone know of where i could find a good condition less that 75k 5 speed manual box?
and second does anyone have any tips on putting it in, i have heard rumours that it is possible to put it in without actualy taking the engine out completly?? could be a load of crap but would save some time if it is possible. i do have all the tools to do the job, just looking for any tips really???
cheers guys and girls for any help you can give me

ok as for sourcing a gear box you can normmally pick up a recon box for abotu £400 with a years warentee and new/recon internals, look in the yellow pages and do some ringing round and see what you find thats the best advice i can give.
as for changing the box its a pig to do on your own ( i have never done so myself but a few friends have done.) so this advce may work for your situation.
you will need to support the engine and gearbox so a couple of jacks will help. jack the car up so you can reach the bolts for the box,.
drain oil to make it lighter ( not much but its still a good idea)
now support the engine with a jack or the vw engine support bar ( the bar is reccomended) now support the gearbox loosen off the engine mounts and gearbox mount and anything else thats attatched ( drive shafts and wireing) dont forget to support the driveshafts
lower the engine gearbox assembly and the gearbox should slide off teh side of the engine allowing you to put i tback on the mounts or leave the suppot bar in place.
im sure a more experianced person will give some more specific guidence
