hiya! iv got a MK2 with MK3 G40 bumpers, was wondering if they can be colour coded with out any problems??? thanx for any help..... any pics would be nice too!

It's possible, but It will require much work.
Cleaing, grinding, grounding, grinding, grounding, grinding, grounding, grinding, than primer, some light grinding with a superfine grinding paper or tool till the bumpers are smooth or how do you call it
Wenn I'm correct your bumpers aren't that smooth at all, for the best result the need almost to be as smooth as your bodywork (metalparts).
After this you can apply the paint (in your desired color) Give it some time to dry and finally apply (not sure how it's called)a corlourless protection coating.
Let it dry again, and when you're sure its complete dry it's time to polish it

That's all

One little thing: it's better to apply severall thin layers of paint and wait before applying an other layer till it's dry. One big layer won't dry as easily, and the result is often not that nice.

And use a special primer suited for the material, not a basic metal primer

right i work in a body shop so here goes,
if u want them smooth there's no need for rubbing the texture off, just get some thick primer and put 4-5 coats on it but remember to leave it to go tacky after each one or it will run!

as with any plastic, bumpers,mirrors,door handles, u need to use plastic primer first to make the paint stick, if not used it WILL flake off!

get some good quality panel wipe (de-greaser)

so in order,

*rub the bumpers with P180 grit paper, (any rougher and the primer won't cover them!) you can use finer stuff,

*de-grease them (panel wipe)

*spray on plastic primer,

*cover them in thick primer, (if doing in garage leave 30 mins to an hour after each coat)

*spray a fine coat of black in the air when it's dry. this is to go into the grooves so u know how deep to rub,

*use P800 or P600 wet or dry paper,

*they should be smooth now so just de-grease them again and paint!!!!

thanx! will give that ago! the only concern i had with the bumpers was the original finish of them, not smooth, but a rough finish, but using a thick primer makes sence i suppose!! how much do i have to rub the bumpers down then, with the fine stuff???

Easiest way to do it is to get some new primered ones.

Just waiting for my front bumper from vagparts, and have the rear one in my loft.

Front one cost £130 new, and I got the rear one off ebay for £45!!

Got a quote for spraying from a local firm and it's gonna cost £100 per bumper. Gonna shop round to see if I can find anyone to do it a little cheaper!

Apparently its a little more costly than spraying panels as plasticised paint is needed.....

Too much work involved in getting them smooth and prepped, and then painted, and the results would turn out to be just 'ok'..

I've seen lots of polo bumpers at shows and meets, and the bumpers that people have done this way are never as good as the cars with factory bumpers.

buy cheap, buy twice. And all that work is too much just to have a second rate finish, and ed up havig buy vag ones anyway.....

as you can see on my picture i've colour coded mine, and u don't get plasticised paint, it's the special primer u need.

im from south wales! i think sumone is gonna do them 4 me, but the chap who is gonna do em, he dosent prepaire them as good as id like, iv seen sum of his work, its good, but i think he rushes the first part of the job, preping! so i was gonna have a go at that bit myself, and then help him do the bumpers.

haha! yer true! coz its my fault then at the end of the day! he is pretty good with the paint as i sed, so if i do a decent job on the rubbin down patr, shuld come out nice!?!??!?! thats my oplan ne ways!!! isnt it everyoners!!
