exhaust noise/cat guard? (fell off)

This had been rattling for a few weeks, seems to be a guard for the cat? But not sure, it only looked welded on, it fell off on the motorway but only completely fell off in the helpful layby. Im not sure if its really needed or if its part of the exhaust or not a cat guard. Does anyone know if its really needed? If I get it welded chances are the welder will put a hole in the exhaust.
Anyone taken one of these off? anyone know what is ? My friends corsa only has a wire one so Im not sure if its needed for mot either.

Hey,
I've been having an annoying rattle coming from the exhaust pipe for the past few weeks. It's driving me crazy!!
I also thought I had a crack in the exhaust, so that's why the noise was making all that rattling. But now that i think about it, it could be just this guard thingy..... since it's a metallic rattle
You reckon?
And i just get under the car and pull it out? Or i need some 'big guns', like brute force & wrench!!!

carefull when you pull it off if you pull to hard and dont snap the welds you will put a hole in the car and that means a blowing exhaust.

what you can do pedro is find the guard underneath, its near the drivers side exhausty bit, get a broom handle, then rev the engine and get it to rattle, then hold the broom handle on the guard and rev the engine and if it doesnt rattle with the boom pushing against it, you know its the guard... pulling it off shouldnt be that hard, but yes be careful as you could put hole in exhaust, saying that I wish I had pulled mine off as I was doing 70 on the A1 at the time and it was busy

for once there was a pull in park right as it happened!
Anyway good luck with that, maybe could hacksaw it off? not sure
