Doing the head Gasket isnt too hard a job really. If you are fairly competant with doing with mechanical jobs, you should be able to diy.
Definately get the head skimmed before putting it back, that usually costs £20-30 from a local machine shop. A complete genuine VAG head set with all the gaskets you will need will only be around £50. You might want to do the timing belt at the same time too.
Parts will probably add up to about £100, for the job done properly.

hi,
yeh so far my bro and I have got the head off. It's being skimmed (£37 + VAT) at the mo, and should be ready for tommorrow. (Hopefully!!) Got the gasket set, approx £30, plus a new oil filter, new fan switch and new water pump. Just in case they were the reasons why it didn't cool down. Bought 10 litres of oil, needs a good flushing through. We opened the sump and it wasn't a pleasant sight. Custard coloured liquid (oil, coolant, and water emulsification!) Nice.
If it all goes well it should be up and running tommorrow, and being even more optimistic, at No Rice in Guilford tommorrow night.
Cheers for advice
Steve

Got the head back from being skimmed. Looks sweet as. Everything is back on. Had major trouble when my bro dropped a screw into the lower camshaft cover. Had to crack it open to get to it. So need a new plastic cover. Apart from that, we are gonna try and start it today, so ive got my fingers crossed!

Started yesterday, had to give it a bit of revs first. But let it idle and it seemed ok. Just need to wait for those self adjusting tappets to adjust!! Stop that classic Ford noise! Im gonna get my local VW dealer to order in the plastic cover, wack it on Sunday (Hopefully!), and I could in theory be back on the road by Monday. But it never goes that smoothly so i will just have to wait and see!.
