Hello. Does anyone know for sure what grade of engine oil goes into this car? ive read two different things in two different places. one says 5w30 and the other says 10w40. the other thing is none of them say what type of oil should go into it. is it mineral, semi synthetic or fully synthetic?

Any insight will be appreaciated.

I put semi-synthetic last year as Volkwagen recommended. This year I am using Fully synthetic gold. I think it runs better with the fully Synthetic, personally.

and what specification are you using? and also how much mileage are you getting out of a tenner? my fuel economy seems very low atm. castrol website recommends 5w30

10w 40 Quantum silver. it was developed for the engine. its only £11 per 5 ltrs

and you are better off running that and changing oil every 3-5k than you are running high spec long life oil and changing it every 10 months.

if hes still around on here ask bstrdchild hes a legend when it comes to oils and engines.

use the search and have a look at the difference oil and oil changes make he had 2 pics of heads that had done 100,000 miles one with 3k oil changes since 50,000 miles the other at dealer sheduled times.

the one with the longer oil chaneg interval had swarf in the oil and the head was blackish and the regular chaneg one had no signs of swarf and was a golden brown colour.

read that. i had alot of information in it. the pics have since been taken from photobox. but the information is still there.

do a search on pistonheads edition38 or clubpolo. they all have threads on oil and changes ect and different advantages of all the different types.

read this also
http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html

that is the best guide on the internet. ( note he has put a copyright notice mid way through the text to stop you selling it or reusing it as your own as you have to read it first :P)

i cant think of any more links at the moment.

Hi guys,

Ive decided to change my oil to get the most performance out of the car, money not an object. anyone know the absolute perfomrnace engine oil (semi synth, 10w40) out there?

I'm still here.......

Performance can mean two things and how you are going to use the car factors on what oil you should use

Thinner oils will create less drag and result in better mpg and performance - eg Mobil 0W-30

Thicker oils will provide better protection under high loads - eg Milers 10W-60

My track car I use 10W-60 because I don't want to rebuild the engine after every trackday it does reduce the bhp but I'll live with that

and what is the feeling here about using an engine flush before putting the new oil in? some say it is bad bcos it releases deposits, others say you should always use an engine flsuh.

Never ever use engine flushes IMHO - nasty stuff

better to do a series of frequent oil changes with cheap oil
