Moving elec window switches

Hi all!!!

I have a lovely silver R reg mk4 polo which ive had for just over a year now. Ive done a few minor mods to it but havent realy touched the ICE.

It has a aftermarket sony CD headunit which I want to upgrade to a DVD player built into the dash. After looking on EBay ive found some realy good deals that have a CD/DVD headunit and a seperate screen, so to install will require two headunit sized slots.

What id like to do is place the screen in the standard headunit slot and place the new headunit where the electric window switches are (I beleive that this can be cut out to the correct size?). My question is - where do i place the window switches as they are now out of a home? and has any one ever done this or something similar before before?

Any help or comments would be appreciated :D

Nick

P.S. please feel free to move topic to ICE, but i felt it was more mk4 specific than todo with general ICE!

Hello,

You have several options, since the windows switches are just 5 wires connecting. If you add a few centimetres of wire to it, you can place it virtually anywhere in the car.

Some options:

(he changed to the golf 3 switches, but you still get the idea)

Others fiberglass that part of the console and get the buttons, oil temps or other stuff in there. See beneath the radio

If you get 6n2 doorcards you can use the buttons on the doorcards, OEM style. But it takes a lot of trimming

Thanks,
I like the idea of moving them in front of the gear stick. Is that console straight out of a golf?

Hi,

No that's the polo console, with drilled holes to fit the switches and then wrapped around leather. But just as long as you make the hole a perfect fit, you can get your switches there.

I added a central locking button and also got it in there. Then i bought some leatherette and wrapped it.

You can go to the scrapyard, buy this small piece for a few pounds and practice on it to make sure how it looks.
