Hi, I am going to do my own servicing for my polo. Can anyone advice on the following?

How to pull the engine cover off? One thread here says 'Just Pull' but I tried that and the cover is connected to alot more stuffs underneath. The air intake pipe is connected to it also. Can't see how the cover can come off without pulling the other stuff off as well.

Right, on the 9N petrol engine, the cover is secured by four cover mounted rubber donuts pushed down onto four engine top mounted waisted pegs. So, if your engine looks the same, then it really is just a matter of pulling it up at the front first - just enough to release it from these fixings, then the rear - and removing any small pipes and other cover mounted bits. Mine was very tight to move - just try lifting up the front at both ends at the same time - you should feel some "give" and then it will seperate.

Just realised I posted in the wrong section.

My air intake pipe just fits inside either the underside of this cover - which is the aircleaner by the way, or stays with this "cover" and fits inside the snorkle or something. On my car there is a small pipe to pull off this "cover" at the rear right hand side. BTW what is your engine code and I will check up my ETOS parts listing for it - just to make sure I am giving you good information.

How do I get the engine code? Thanks. Sorry very new to VAG cars. <y first one in fact. Hope to get a used Gof Gti in the near future when there are lots of the current model in the second hand market.

The engine code should be on the data sheet stuck to the inside of the service book and also inside the spare wheel well. You should really get hold of a workshop manual - probably the Haynes Repair Manual for the 9N Polo would be a good starting point for all your DIY servicing needs. Maybe grab one on ebay !

I was checking out the haynes manual for the 9n polo but hesitated to buy coz I needed a 9n3 which isn't out yet. Are they the same? I can buy online today if they are the same. Thanks.

The Haynes manual for the 9N Polo will not be totally correct for your car - but the 9N3 is just a version of facelift of the original 9N1 or 9N2. It will be a lot better than nothing, unless you buy a copy of ElsaWin on ebay that includes your model year of car. Did you manage to find the engine code yet?

So sorry, I completely forgotten about this thread. I finally got the engine code. Its 55 KW 4V AG4.

I managed to pull the sucker off the engine. Its quite easy now that I know how to do it. I cleaned the air filter and will be changing the oil soon. Just need to know where the oil drain plug is? There are a few large bolt underneath the engine but not sure which one is the oil plug.

It will be at the very bottom of the engine, looks like t goes stright into the box and doesnt look like its holding anything lol.

Not sure on the engine you have since I have a TDI, but the same applies for most cars since the oil has to drain from the very bottom

Thanks. Will check that out. I am still trying to figure out how to remove the spark plug coil to access the spark plug. Any idea?

Hi, the code you found (earlier) is not the engine code - it should be a three letter code - you need this to get your parts.
Right removing coils from plugs - very tricky as you really need something to pull them off (up) Haynes suggests a length of welding rod bent. I used two screwdrivers pivoting off ??? take care not to damage the wiring loom. Keep very close in towards the centre of the coil so that you do not break off the connector .Also once you ease the coils up a bit you need to unplug them - for some of them this means you need to open up the plastic cage that keeps the wiring together. Remember to pull the coils up straight so that you don't snap them or their extensions as they are about 3>4 inches long!

Oh dear, that sounds too complicated. But will give it a go. I will try to see if I can get the engine code again. The code I gave above is taken off the wheel well and its next to the engine code mark. Will see if I have made a mistake in seeing it. Thanks.

Re the engine code - you should find a paper printed label that includes a barcode on top of the cam belt cover - plastic cover on LHS of engine maybe hidden by the air cleaner assembly. The engine code should be three letters (upper case) followed by 5 or 6 numbers - that bit is the actual s/n of your engine - the German word for engine number includes the word "motor".
