Hi all,

Just had this happened to me yesterday. The fan starts making lots of unhappy noise. Not sure how to describe the sound, it was screeching one time and something else later and suddently it just stop dead. Aircon still working though. I tried turning it by hand after i kill the engine and it will move only when I forced it. After turning a few rounds, it get stuck again. The turning isn't smooth as my other radiator fan. I flick the fan and it turns many rimes. This one just turn a couple of turns and stopped.

Any idea why this is? Thanks.

May have something stuck in the brushes - or perhaps a negative voltage?

I managed to take out the fan and did some DIY maintenance on it. I couldn't open the back panel of the motor out as there are about six welded points on it. So I took out a grinder and grounded the welds out and pry the plate out. After taking out another plate with the carbon brush on it, I noticed there is ceramic part which covers a resistor. But the ceramic piece is broken and the pieces may have got lodged inside the motor. I compressed air the motor and put everything back. Its seemd to be working fine now. It wouldn't turn the other way as it will get stuck but it turns fine the correct way, if you know what i mean. I tried turning with my hand to test. But I am not sure how long that motor will last me. I may need to egt a new one. Anyone done a retrofit with a different motor?

They may have even updated it since they were first released - this could be a fault picked up and it was therefore revised in later models.

Cheers,

I wonder if VW will issue a recall. Its bad that it only lasted me less than 1.5 years. Its working for now, but if VW do a recall, that will be good. Can I write to VW directly I wonder? But I have tempered with it so not sure it is still eligible for a free replacement though.
