clutch problems?

The other day I was driving my Polo 1.0 (2000) back home when I realised changing through the gears became difficult (imposible when not moving but with the engine still running) and that the car would no longer allow me to stay stationary when in gear.
I had noticed during the couple of weeks before that the engine would still be engaged a little bit even with the clutch fully down which would result in a very slight role forwards at traffic lights etc unless i put the car in neutral.
Now, when starting the engine in gear one with the clutch down it it will jolt forwards due to the starter motor before the engine starts itself.
Another problem I had was when changing into reverse, 90% of the time the gearbox would crunch.
My dad seems to beleive that there is still a chance I might not have to spend £300 replacing the clutch and that the clutch cable may just need tightening. Is there any other reasons why my car would be doing this? It's now impossible to drive and ive just spent £2,000 on the car and £1,300 on insurance for a car that doesnt work.
Is there anything that might be worth checking before it gets towed to the garage?
Thanks for your help
