Lowering On 17s

Ok guys, I got 17s on my polo with 205/35's on them. The drivers side wheel ligthly touches when turning sharply on occasions.

Would lowering it about 20mm and stiffening the suspension fix this? Cos I noticed the Arch may fit the wheel better as it would follow the contor of the wheel. Anyone got any experiance with this?

And i know that some of you are gunna go, get 16s lol but I dont want them, all the polo round where i live have 16s and 15s, But i like having the biggest hehe.

Thanks :)

I'm afraid it looks like its on stilts and can't be lowered enough to compensate or handle but its what you want so no biggie. Lowering it 20mm may make the tyres scrub a lot more. You'll certainly need arch work with that.

You could torsion it using strut braces etc

I had a MK5 with 17". 4*100 ET38 - you defo need 205/45/17 tyres. I had it lowered 40mm approx. It never rubbing unless full lock (nothing you cant fix urself though)

You have a mk4 so might be diffrent.

After having 17" and now have 15" i would strongly recommend that you get 15" over 17"

hehe i dont think so NOZ I live near Leeds :)

Hum maybe if I just get the hammer out and bash the wheel arch in 5mm it might stop rubbing

Worst come to worse I'll get my Dad to re do the arch with me. thank god i got a Welder for a Dad :P

And neil-f I have lower profile tyres than the ones you suggested. I guess the MK4 and MK5 have a big wheel arch difference.

I am thinking of going with some 15's as the tyres are cheaper

I'll search about and see what some other people say. But I was told that I would be able to lower it 20mm and as long I stiffen the suspension, the car should be ok. The car dont rub at the top of the arches at all just the middle section. Suppose all i can do is try.

Thanks for ya help anyways

My bad, it was identical to yours and thought I know iv seen that somewhere. No biggie.

Probably would be best getting 15s as your tyres don't come cheap! Also theres less hassle with scrubbage and you can slam it even lower :D

You don't have any clear pics but from what I see you could do with alloys that actually suit the car far better. For tyres you should check out www.mytyres.co.uk very cheap. I go hi performance Falkens for £135 inc delivery. Great sevice.

yea i been on mytyres.co.uk before.
but i been looking at 15s today seen some "Dare" ones i like. I think they are called Dare X90 silver or summut. So Im gunna sell my 17s i hope the 15s are wide like my 17s. 7.5 inch looks good from the back :P

am also thinking of getting my bumpers Smoothed off as well. Im just running low on funds atm.

And as you said, noz, im gunna slam the Car to the floor as soons as i get the new wheels.

I hope i can get £300 for my wheels with tyres so that shud pay for most of it :)

My mk4 was lowered 50mm on 17s with falken 205/40/17s...i had to fettle the front inner arch a little and take off the mud flaps,,,it rubbed (very slightly) if i was giving it death....

My tyres are practically bald seeing i'v lowered mine 100mm and still have 195/50/15s scrubbing like a b*tch even when I hit the slightest of odd surface on the ground! When the cars fully loaded the arches basically sitting on the tyres

Won't need much to make yours look sweet seeing its black. Just remove the rubstribs (won't cost a thing), debadge or black and get black LED clusters or mk5 reds for rear lights.

hehe omg u just said everything im actually gunna do :P

but first of off the car has 2 rust patches so they are my priority lol and the back bumper needs some work as it was scrapped and had a dint in the metal bottom section but its been like that since i got it. I think if i put £500 on getting the body work up to scratch then I can prat about making the car look how i want it. ATM i got no moneys as am off on holiday soon snowboarding and its cost me a bomb :D

hehe its addictive :P and Ive noticed that I have become more and more skint through getting little bits and bats. I think my next investment for the car is the Rear lights and a debadged grill. You think thats what i should go for next?
