Suspension problem

ok, I've got coilovers on my MK5 GTi and they have been clunking for ages, its the spring turning slighlty when i turn the steering wheel.

anyway i've been told that the spring might not be seatin the top mount correctly, so i've just had a look at the top mounts and there doesnt appear to be a recess for the end of the spring to sit in. Is that right?

Also, i've had a look at the original suspension and theres this bearing (pictured below) that looks like it sits between the end of the spring and the top mount. I can only think that this is to allow the spring to rotate smoothly if it needs to.

If thats the case, does this bearing need to be transferred over onto the coilovers?

Are the bearings in the top mount/bush worn? If so they can catch and then release which gives a knocking/twanging sound [via spring movement].

Thing to do is jack on side up and get someone to turn the wheel and you place one hand on the spring to see if its moves.

Also, with car on ground, engine on for PS, lift bonnet and as before get someone to turn wheel lock-2-lock while you place you hand on the top mount.

Any catching, knocking, clunking will be felt. If you don't feel anything and the noise is when your turning, hard lock at slow sppeds I'd still reckon on top mounts. Had 2 Audis and R32 do this and it was top mounts each time.
