Just to coment on

Perhaps I can solve a mystery :wink:

I use Millers 15/60 synthetic competition grade oil in a large capacity early 1980's engine design where is is no longer possible to buy new oil pump gears or casings and clearances have been compromised by 200,000 miles of use - that added to the fact it gets hammered round the track and oil temperatures get very high even with a full flow oil cooler

If the oil thins out too much as it has done in the past when using lower grades the big end bearings pick up and thats another engine rebuild I can do without so since switching to that oil I haven't had any engine failures due to oil thining out.

Downsides

I do have to be gentle with the engine and revs for a long time before stretching it's legs as the warm up time is extended by the full flow oil cooler set up

It's expensive (but cheaper than an engine rebuild)

I only use it for 3000 miles of summer driving (although a fair chunk of that is to and from trackdays plus the mileage clocked up on track)

I guess it's a compromise but I don't use the car in the winter.
