I order a replacement back box the other day for my 91 GT. However when it arrive the diameter of the exhaust was too big to fit. I then order an exhaust for a normal mk3 Polo and that one fits perfectly. Any idea why? Has the previous owner being messing with it?

well the bore on the pipes for my GT were much larger bore than the exhaust on my mk2 polo, so I guess they could have had a standard system fitted to save money, or the fast fit place might have thought it was a normal polo

The GT and G40 have a slightly larger bore compared to the lesser engined Mk 3's. It sounds like a non-gt exhaust has been fitted previosly so the middle section isnt the right diameter.

You could buy the relevant centre section, I dont think they cost that much.
