Hi all.

Newbie here... Apologies for reposting, but I put this in the wrong forum...Whoops

My partner is considering getting rid of her Nissan 200sx - with only 30k miles from new, and getting a more modern, sensible, town friendly car. I have suggested a Polo GTi...Small ish, decent spec, good looks, reliable etc.....

Had a Mk4 Golf GTi myself which was OK, Presumably the polo is of the same build and drive quality...?

Also when looking at cars what are the points to look out for? Any give aways on test drives? What should I be looking for in the service book interms of cambelt changes; 40K, 60K?

Any advice much appreciated......

cambelt is due 60k i believe with the gtis check for the clutch, pedal box and also gear box cos they are all i weak point on them !!

other than that just check the electric windows, central locking, service history is a plus :D

hope u find one soon cos im still on the hunt lol 8)

Cambelt is now put down to 40k or every 4 years, whatever comes first.

Interior build quality is good and the dash is much nicer imo than in a Mk4 Golf, although not as ergonomic.

If the gearbox is making whining noises, walk away.

Pedal box is a dealer recall and can be done free of charge at a VW dealer, if not done all ready.

Corroding BBS is common, as are aerial bases and bootlid handles.

The GTI is such a good overall car, great spec, very nippy. Fuel wise I have had 31 MPG lowest and 46 MPG highest.

Price wise you can get one for 3k but it will be an older example (V/W reg) with probably a high mileage. You can pay up to 5.5k for a low mileage Y/51 plate with full leather interior.

Hope that helps and good luck in the search!

Also to add, there should be a sticker in the spare boot well stating that the pedal box recall has been done if its said to have been done

Mines for sale too :D
Both are in the for sale section, not sure where you're based though!
Lovely little cars, I'm only selling mine for a 1.8T Golf because I want something with a turbo to tune, I'll miss the handling of the Polo!
