Just purchased some 17x7.5 wheels and want to know what the best tyre to fit is.

I'm probably going to go with a 205/40/17, just wanted your opinions on the best tyre to fit to my alloys, pros, cons and where to buy from.

205/40R17 - the most common on this application. Good price also.
215/35/R17 or 225/35/R17 - You may try also this sizes, but they are not cheap.

I have Toyo Proxes T1-R on my GTI, and they are great ! Very good grip, and the best price for this size, here in Romania. You may also try Yokohama... but they are more expensive.

I see you got those BBS RWs then Grapo.

I'd go for 215/40s myself as I have 205/40s on 7.5 inch wide wheels and there is virtually no kerb protection.
The Polo Dune/Fun runs 215s with these wheels.

but the dune/fun is also raised to run on these width wheels and tyre combo

i run comps which are also 7.5x17 and the proxes do sit slightyl proud of the wheels and give a nice subtle sensible stretch

i also have another 4 spare toyo proxes t1-r tyres 205x40x17 which are 3 weeks old if your interested, so still over 6 mm of grip etc,

you can have them for what i gave for them, which is £160 collected or postage at your own expense

Didnt know they were called RW.

Was informed they were called BBS Radials.

That's a bargain for Toyos.

Jeff, I suggested the 215s as they protect the rim better. I sold my old VW Evolo wheels with 205s on them and the guy now runs 215s on them and they just sit on the rim a bit better. The difference in gearing is minimal. Wish I had fitted 215s to my ABT wheels but as I already had 205s knocking about I used them.
You may well need the stretch of the tyre with lowered suspension to keep the wheels clear of the arch, but with standard suspension you want as much tyre as possible to fill the gap in the wheelarch!

postage would be about 30 quid at a guess mate, so should we say £190 all in? interested?

You must have a store of tyres building up!

He's not got a Dune has he!!!!

The Cup has 7.5x17 wheels and got 205/40 tyres, and the workshop manuals spec that size as the tyre size for upgraded alloys.

Who cares what the dune spec is, the car is different.

Err, me or I wouldn't have mentioned it!
Chassis wise the only difference between the Dune and a GTI is the suspension settings and a couple of mm of sidewall height is hardly going to mess the gearing up on a GTI.
Just giving the guy a bit of common sense advice if he wants a bit of extra protection from kerbs.
