Hi,

In the past this site has been a great help for me and it looks like it i am in trouble once again with my polo

I just needed some advise if im being ripped off by my mechanic or if its ok!

My car for the past 1 month has been giving me the oil warning light occasionally. Infact firstly when i use to switch the heathing on, i use to get this funny smell, like bacon lol sometimes eggs, and sometimes just like oil burning, i know its funny and weird but it wasnt a constant thing! Just now and then!

Well i ignored it cause it didnt bother too much as once i switch the engine off and leave it for few hours, it will be running normal again.

However as i am not good with cars, i thought i should get the oil changed, maybe thats the reason and well i did that 2 weeks ago.

After the oil change i havent had any oil warning lights or bad smell from the heater.

But 2 days ago when i switched the heathing on i smelt that funny smell for 30 seconds and then it was gone! Well i decided to have my exhaust changed!

Again its been running fine normal up until TODAY MY WORST NIGHTMARE!

I had a exam at 10am and well i was about to leave my house at 9am when suddenly after switching the car on and warming it up for 5 mins the OIL WARNING SIGN and noise came up!

I got abit panic cause i had no clue why after all of the above its still happening. Plus my exam was going to start in 40mins and i had to get to harrow!

Well i had no choice but to get a taxi and leave the car at home! Lukily i made it just at 10am!

When i got back i took it to a local mechanic just 2 streets away from my house and well he said that it might be a faulty switch or it could be a sump or something like that.

I didnt understand but he said that i will have to do it otherwise if i keep driving it it will damage the engine?

He said to me he has to take something out from the bottom, then clean something, put a new switch and he said something else aswell, sorry dont remember properly but said its a big job!

He said it will cost £160 it total! He said he is also going to change the headgasket as he is taking everything out! He said if your headgasket goes at a later stage it would cost you alot so its better changing it!

I hope someone knows what he is doing by reffering to the above and if i am being conned or is he telling the truth that the labour involves alot by removing everything.

The thing is he will have to keep the car for 1 day he said!

£160 sounded alot but i just said yes as i really need my car for work!

Any help, advise would be much appreciated!

I believe he said, "it could be..."? in that case shouldn't he check what the actually cause is before changing a couple of parts he may "think" is the cause. Some garages just try resolving the problem by changing common faults using trial and error. In some cases it works but others you spend money for nothing on excessive things for no reason and the problems may pursist.

hum for the work hes gunna do i dont think £160 isnt 2 bad however, i think that its just ur Sump gasket thats gone and thats a p*** take of a job tbh all u need is some new oil and a wrench

but then again u never know what the problem is untill its looked at

Some explaination

Oil pressure warning light is the "red oil can" on the dash

If it comes on above 2000 rpm the buzzer will sound in addition to the light

mine does this on a regular basis if the car hasn't been used for any length of time. Comes on a random lengths of time for no apparent reason.

I would add that my oil is at the correct level and I change it every 3000 miles so it's always in good condition - I have a sneaking feeling that the oil pressure sensor is starting to pack up or the wiring to it is being affected by moisture

I'd start with a new sensor - when I find it that's what I will replace
