What's different on a 16v?

Just wondering what's different on a 16v car compared to, say, a 1.4 8v (Not trim wise - mechanically)...

Oh, and I expected the gearbox ratio's to be the same in the 8v and 16v - but no chance! The 8v is doing 90mph at 4000rpm, and the 16v seems to be doing about 75 or 80mph at 4000 rpm. I don't care though! The induction roar makes up for it!

p.s. am still lovin the car :D

Not much really David. Other than the bumpers and interior the only mechanical differences I can think of are :

256mm discs (239mm on 8V)
gearbox
suspension is susposedly 10mm lower but it doesn't look it
exhaust system is a bigger diameter bore

fair play. i was wondering if the suspension was set up any different - I thought I'd heard that the shocks are better? 10mm lower?! Next to my 40mm lowered 1.0L it looks like a 4x4, and that's only 40mm!

Shock absorbers on the 16V are gas-filled.

That's right - 16V's and the 1.9 Diesels had ARB's :D

On continental cars, the 1.6 onwards, as well as the diesels had ARB's. The 1.6 got the thinnest @ 18mm, the diesels got the 20mm version, and the GTI got the 22mm. I'm guessing the 1.4 16V got the 20mm as well, but I'm not sure. Could be 18mm as well.

can these be fitted to lesser models?

The ARB's? I believe so.

When zee Germans implant a higher spec engine they're required to fit the ARB too and I've never heard of any problems.

I'm sure the 18mm bar can be swapped for the 22mm one, if you switch the linkages too.

I think we disscussed swapping the small ARBS for biiger ones elsewhere on the forum, but yeah, i wanted to know if they could be fitted to models that came without them.
