2 MAJOR QUESTIONS!!!!

1st...

WHAT is a reasonable price to get the main gasket in the engine replaced... 1 garage told me £320 and today got another one in a doggy part of camberwell were quoting £120????

2nd...

WHAT is an easy cam shaft replacement that will fit into the 1.4 8v 6n engine... as if they are taking the engine apart they said it would only be a couple quid extra to change the cam shaft... any ideas... PLEASE.

1) don't know pounds m8, I deal with euro's so can't help you on this one here

2) cam from a Polo mk3 GT with enginecode 3F is nice swap, but if you're doing it, why not just plug in a 260+ duration Schrick / Crane / Dbilas / Cat cam?

LOL... LeMeph it is under the arches!!!!!
.. but their is alot of em under the arches.. their is one specialist place, and then thier is one a know threw a dealership that told me these guys were good for fixing things.

I spoke to another guy i have met who specializes in VW's his website looks wicked and is a sound guy... this is what he said...

"Your Car Has common head gasket problem, oil leaking from the corner of head into
alternator. Needs a new head gasket and a new timing belt if it hasn't been changed.
that will cost you around £200 all inclusive. No benefit in changing standard cam as
you would need exhaust system, induction system, gas flowed head and a rechip of
the ECU to get very little gains for a large outlay of cash! Stick with what you
have or trade in for a 16V model."

I think i will just suffer and get the engine fixed, and leave out changing the cam shaft unless anyone here can convince me that it will make a difference???? anyone done it? Also... anyone know what price they have paid for fixing the engine gasket????

 I'm laughing my @rs€ off over here! You Brittish can be hilariously funny

I think that this very little power gain is exactly the reason why circuit-prepared cars have got all these items changed  Just to waist money and get a very little power gain over a standard engine, yes indeed!!

If you're looking for the last 1/10th then changing all those parts is needed, of course.

I suggest you do the sums (both £cost and approximate horsepower/torque gained) and comare it to the cost of changing to a 16v.

So

-Engine mods to get you from 60bhp to 100bhp
-Brakes and suspension to make sure your car can handle the extra power
-Insurance to cover all your mods

In my opinion, you're best off waiting to get a 16v or similar.

hurrah for a common sense post - I agree

Insurance on a 1.4 8V converted to 1.4 16V is gonna hurt far more than insuring a proper one

LOL!!! the last two responses are so serious!!!!

Im just having a laugh, i dont take this seriouly, its my car and i like to customize it.

I thought as i was going to have to pay for the engine to be fixed why not capitalize on the expense and get some extra VA VA VOOM!!!

LOL...But thanks for your opinions, and im going to get the engine head gasket replaced and timming belt, and hope i don't regret not having a sports cam fitted in.

You asked a question, and got an answer.

I won't bother taking the time to offer my advice in the future.

Take offense if you want. It was not meant to take the p*** out of your responses, it was just to note how seriously it was taken, i thought their would be a bit more of a fun responses, with people that are madly into modding any thing possible.

you asked a question

a few people gave a point of view - some of which I agree with.

You want a fun response to every post you make???

Stick a V8 in it after all you've got take half the engine out to do the head gasket might as well take the rest of the engine out and put a decent lump in it!
