Hi All,

My petrol gauge is up the creek. When its full up, it sits about 2mm above the full line, so its covering the petrol pump icon - and the red light comes on when it hits a quarter of a tank.

Anybody else had this problem and if so, how did you fix it?

when i filled my polo up it always went over the full mark, thats definately normal....as for the light the gti didnt have one, but the cupra does beep & the light come on just under a quarter

The thing is, it never used to do this, coz ive had the petrol guage running empty on 0 - and it was!! Even when the engine is off the guage isnt at the bottom line

my line on my guage wasnt on the dead empty line so i wasnt going to fill up straight away but it started loosing power and cut out!!! so me and my m8s had a nice long walk 2 the petrol station in the freezing cold to find out they had run out of jerry cans to put petrol in.
Luckily my freind with a mk4 came to the rescue!

lol james could tell you a good story bout having no fuel, and me nearly totalling my car!!

heh that was funny, almost turned out to be a total nightmare though

basically we went some 150 miles to a meet, by the time we actually found it the place was practically dead. We then headed back and I told alex I was low on fuel, passed some s**t total garage but refused to fill with normal petrol so continued on our way, then some impreza went by...so naturally i had to chase after it, i then looked down to see my fuel gauge was below the last line (never seen it that low), my onboard computer said i had 5 miles left so we pulled over.

Alex then used his amazing sat nav to locate the nearest garage which was apparently 5 miles away, we went off the motorway & into the middle of no-where...literally it was like a scene out of a horror movie, we were driving through a forest....., my engine emissions light comes on, about 15 miles later we got to a tiny village with like two houses & alex stops to tell me that the garage is supposed to be right here!.. By this point its nearing midnight on a sunday night.

So alex decides to head off on his own to find a petrol station whilst i wait by my beeza, about 20 mins later i get a call saying that the garage is closed & he's putting the next one in..then over the speaker i hear him saying "man where am i, i'm on a tiny dirt track....oh s**t...loud noise (sounds like skidding), oh my god, oh my god....my cars f****d, ive crashed, my engine is smoking....my cars f****d" phone hangs up.....It then occurs to me that im in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no fuel, alex has crashed in a similar situation, oh and i dont have recovery service on my policy.

A few minutes later i get a call from alex, he's ok & so is the car..hypochondriac!(you might need to fill this bit in because i cant remember what happened to you), heads to a petrol station and about an hour later makes his way back to me....so we got home at around 4 in the morning...haha..man that was long

back on subject, in my previous car (peugeot) my petrol gauge was f****d, it wouldnt give me any reading,

turned out the copper coil was knackered which the needle runs across that actually measures the petrol amount,
its located on the petrol tank float.

It maybe possible that this has shifted slightly and reads higher than it should do?

It's a long shot, and i dont have a clue if the polo's tank reader works in the same way, but if it does it maybe worth checking?

thanks, i got an autoglym cleaning set for christmas so thought i would give it a test! took like 2 hours to do and i was knackered put looks worth it.
My camera isnt the best so probably carnt see the real elbow grease put into it

My mechy said today it could be the sender, but its not reading erratically....just the dial isnt going back to its home position properly. Might take the clocks out and reposition the arm so it stops annoying me lol
