Rev Limiter ?

Hi everyone, I have a new polo 1.4 automatic (80bhp) that has done over 3k now.
I just wanted to know that if I want to put my foot down in the car, what is the max rpm the car should goto without potentially damaging the engine.
Will the revs go upto the redline, or will something kick in which prevents that.
I have also read somewhere that with automatics, you can not really redline the engine ?
On my polo, the redline is above 6000 rpm's.
Thanks for your help and what a great site !
Cheers

Well an automatic is not really the thing for drag racing so maybe you have the wrong type of car if you want to red line it!!!
The torque converter will probably be slipping up a gear as you approach max revs.
If you want an auto with launch control and sporting pretences you'd better save up for a VAG DSG car........

Hi BeezerDiesel, thanks for your reply. That answers my question. Yes, a VW DSG car would be very nice, but a bit pricey at the moment, even the used ones.
However, I have read somewhere that the next generation polo will have DSG, so that's great news, as I need the auto element also.

Direct shift gearbox - basically a two clutch gearbox system that high end golfs and some new gen polos will have in them. Enables super quick, smooth gear changes!

I had the pleasure of driving a Golf GTI DSG at the weekend...I was utterly gobsmacked as to how smooth the gear changes were, you could barely notice! It has the flappy paddles but since it was my first drive of an automatic I stayed clear. Confidence and all, took me about 5 mins to a-climatise myself, not used to a car only having two pedals, lol
The car is amazing and the DSG made it even more so!!! It'll be my next car...infact I'm pricing them up as we speak, lol

The next generation DSG is a 7 speeder I believe, that should be fun!
SEAT have some excellent DSG Leons and there's a good few for sale at pretty reasonable prices. The 140TDI with DSG should be excellent, and the FR TFSI is four grand cheaper than a Golf GTI DSG and should be a cracker. Would love one of these as my next car but still prefer the Polo's compact size.
