I have a 1999 Polo that has been extremely reliable, however over the last couple of days it started stalling, now it won't start, when I try to start it, it misses and backfires, if I leave it and try again later sometimes it will start but if I turn it off and try again in will not restart. It has the 1.6 litre petrol motor.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

many thanks
AJ

take off your leads and plugs and check them for oil or damp. I'm not familiar with these engines but if it has coil packs maybe theyre faulty, or if it just has an old skool dizzy take the cap off and spray some wd40 incase there's damp. Failing that check you have fuel getting to the engine and obviously that the air supply isnt blocked. Sounds like an ignition fault to me. Ya didnt change plugs recently and mix up the leads or anything?

Hope some of this is accurate/useful!
