Hi all, just wondering if anyone can help me with a problem I've been having, I've seen it posted on here a while ago but not sure how to fix it. Basically when starting the engine cold the auto-choke doesn't kick in and I think it's something to do with the engine temperature sensor malfunctioning. Can anyone advise and tell me how to fix it or if not where to take it without getting charged a fortune. Many thanks!

Yep def the engine temp sensor ! very comon on polos i must change at least 3 a week! Very easy 2 do just pull the clip off then pull the sensor out. replace and then refill the coolant!
Just make sure
1) the engine is cold when u do it or u will end up in hospital!
2) when u refill the coolant leave the lid of the expansion bottle and start the car, and leave it 2 run for a while (this gets rid of any air bubbles in your coolant system!

Cheers guys, is it easy to do this myself. Bear in mind I'm a novice, can you anyone give me clear instructions? Where's best place to pick up a new sensor, local VW garage?

funny i should have posted on this 2day a friend of mine has just brought his polo round 2 me saying it wont start properly when cold 2 mins and 5052 later what pops up as a fault Temp sensor!
One way 2 check if ur not sure is 2 disconect the temp sensor (just pull the plug of ) and it should start better! not perfect but better ! thats what i have done for my mate so he can still use it till i get him a new sensor from work 2 moro !
from what i rember there about 17 quid and 5 pound for a bottle of coolant!
Should get 2 unless uve done it before and have the knack then u can get away with one bottle!
Hope this helps!

Is this it, if so I presume i just pull it out, replace it (sounds simple but if there's any details please let me know) Fill the radiator back up with water and antifreeze? then good to go??

your temp sensor is at the side of your cam it has a green casing try not to brake the retaining clip and loose the washer when you replace it
