egr valve

hi lads iv got a 6n2 1.4tdi and a mate of mine whos got a 150brake golf chipped, cammed etc to 240ish bhp, recons thats its a gd thing to blank the pipe going to the egr valve! is this true ? wat will it do and will it cause any damage in the future? also would i gain much by a bigger intercooler?
