I've just received the letter from VW...good news for the five door owners of 2002 models..there were only nine of you in total!
The breakdown is as follows, apparently they don't have the exact numbers for the three colours but could only tell me by year and the number of doors.
In 2000, there were 1335 produced of the three door and 685 of the five door.
In 2001, there were 904 of the three door and 445 of the five door.
In 2002, there were only 19 of the three door and only 9 of the five door!
The letter confirms the production figures so I'm not sure if that is the number produced in total (i.e for Europe etc etc) or those sold just in the UK.
Have never read that before, thats really interesting!
I'm one of 3397 cars, with only 444 cars out there with the same year of reg and number of doors
Wonder how many are left?

Through some strange 'miracle' mine was registered in 2000 (november i think), yet has a 2001 chassis number. So was mine 'produced' in 2000 or 2001?
It was obviously made in 2000 toward the end, and like all marques, given a later chassis number. But when they count these production figures, do they count them as sold or produced?

Weird. My car has some parts that were made in 2000. Yet the car was registered March 2001

Couldn't they just be VW parts that have been replaced and were sat on the shelf for a while?

Mouse, just because the car was registered in 2001 doesn't necessarily mean it was built in 2001

For the most part I like having such a rare car but a few things bug me; I'm concerned about the availabiltiy of parts in years to come and I wonder how many were sold throughout the rest of the world.
Those figures in the thread linked above say they were production figures, I find this hard to believe, as they sold the GTi throughout europe.
For example, in 2007 there were 76,683 VW Polos sold in Germany, so 2 years of that from 2000 - 2002 would probably be around 140,000, bear in mind thats germany alone. Source:

Those figures might possibly relate to right hand drive production models or UK/Ireland models only?

I know. It just goes to show you though some bits of your car were made even up to a year before it was all put together
@ Tim: 51 plates rans from 1st Sep 2001 to 28th Feb 2002
