Rear 256mm Vented Brakes now on....

Well I finally got my 256mm rear vented brake set-up on - pictures to follow when I get round to taking them.

Everywhere I read people said that there was no point to it because the rears don't do much of the braking....

But after fitting the 312mm on the front it felt like the front brakes were doing ALL the work..

So when you take a look at the standard tiny rears (that look like they belong on a push bike) you can understand why...

So sod it I thought I'm doing the 256mm rears....

Parts you need are...

1. 256mm vented rear discs (I fitted TT225 Quattro ones)
2. Wider calipers from TT225 or Octavia 180 or similar.
3. Carriers from the Octavia 180 or Golf 1.8T 180 (TT225 Quattro will fit if you get spacers) (I used Octavia VRS 180 ones - easy bolt on)
4. You can re-use the standard Polo pads as they are exactly the same.

Worst bit of the job is cutting the lip off brake disc shields as they are too small to go round the 256mm discs.

Once all fitted you need to bleed bleed and bleed some more (pressure bleeder best - pedal pumping did not work to well)

Then let bed in... which mine are now just starting to do.

I have used plain discs all round to maintain a more stock look (and its cheaper..lol)

The complete set-up or fronts and rears feels so much more balanced.

Not pushed them hard yet but you can feel how much more positive the braking is - especially at high speed and with momentum. The brakes have some real stopping power now... :-)

Discs and pads approx £65
Remanufactured calipers in red (like new) £130
Carriers £30
Brake fluid (plenty of for a good fluid change and bleed) £15

So approx £240

try for pics tomorrow...

Where did you buy the parts from?

I was thinking of changing the fronts for Mk4 Golf Anniversary ones but VW wanted silly money for all the parts!

i have a full mk4 golf anniversary / tarox setup up front and its worth the money trust me, buy buy from vag parts for cheaper costs

also for the rears, calipers, carriers, disks and pads from the same golf 4 gti anniversary fits fine also, not need to mix and match parts ... just for everyones knowledge

Mix and match ... hmmm

they are all the same parts just no need to throw money at it..

All the parts can be found elsewhere and cheaper...

Why limit yourself to "purely" Golf Anniversary parts (that are factory painted red" ??

No point wasting money in my opinion.. the exact same parts are on many VAG cars.....

No need to take the easy route - better to learn and try and get your hands dirty.....

Absolutely

There's a lot to be said about doing it yourself, rather than throwing s**t loads of cash at companies to do it for you too. . . .

I'v done all the mods on my car myself (except paint) and really enjoy getting my hands dirty. Have to be honest though I bought the anniversary bits because of the fact they are factory finished in red and the money difference I save by doing it myself I can sort of justify it in my head :D Didnt want second hand stuff for my brake system either - previous bad experience!
I get why people like a specialised company to do work for them though - each to their own and if you have the cash why not?
