Hello everybody :D .

We have just brought a VW Polo 1.4CL 99 Treg 38,000 miles 'one owner full service history 'for my son as his first car and we are well chuffed with it.
First things first it's never had a Cam belt change so we're going to get that done next week by a local mechanic 'I got the Cam belt kit and water pump from our local VW dealer in Oxford for £52 all in (trade price) which I thought was pretty good 'our mechanic said  he'll do the job for £70 so all in with antifreeze £130 is this about right?

The VW stealer wanted £320 to do the job .

He's going to give the car the once over while he's at it. Apart from the usual service stuff is there anything else you guys can recommend he does or looks for while he's got the car?

Couple of other things the 'lad wants to Dee tango the indicators and fit a set of 15'' alloys when he can afford it.
I asked the bloke at VW about clear front lenses 'he reckons about 30 qiud the pair 'so should we go for the OE ones or is there a nicer alternative?

I didn't ask him about the wheels but I worked out using this tire size calculator http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html that he needs 195/45/15 tires.
Can anybody tell me what stud diameter we need 'and the ET(my guess was 38) on the wheels please? And can we go for 7J or 6.5J.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Previous VW's we have owned.

X. Reg Mark 1 golf 1100cc bright yellow

C. reg Polo Coupe S in red (my wife cried when I sold that car )

F. Reg Jeta 1.6 cl midnight blue 'that we had for 10 years(she didn't cry when I sold that )

Hiya mate, welcome to the site!

Your stud pattern is 4X100, and yeh 195/45s are normally the best size tyre. (depending on the the width of the wheels), ET aim for 35-45, but again depends on width of wheels, other offsets will fit.

Yeah the thing with polos as standard is the ride height. Even if you run 195/55/15 you shouldn't get rubbing if not under full load. With regards to alloys I would 15" is the right choice as 17" look to big in many poeples eyes and 16"s your looking at a more expensive tire.

Welcome to the site fella, sounds like a very nice motor you managed to purchase. On the service front it all sounds a good price.

I'd recommend ET 35-38 with the 45 profile tyres. Lower ETs do fit but it all depends on future plans ie lowering etc if you will. 15's look best I reckon and you'll have a great selection of rims depending on the look your son wants. Should be able to get indicators a bit cheaper through these forums etc

Thanks everyone for the help and advice.

We are gona start looking on fleabay for a half decent set of used alloys 'hopefully with titres our budget is £200.

As for the clear lenses I think I'm gona get them from the VW dealer.
If he gives me the same sort of discount that he gave me for the cam belt kit and water pump 'it shouldn't work out too pricey.

Can anyone suggest some decent light options for the back?

I'm definitely not letting him go down the Lexus rout  on the rear lights 'there a bit too Bling Bling IMOH but then I am an old git

maybe something like the stock lights 'but just a bit more up-to-date?

Thanks.

Something OEM for the rear then definatly, 6n2 rears. The ones i got in my sig\/\/. Have a look around at your local scrappeis may just find a pair there. A tiny bit of wiring is involved, something like switching 2 wires or something on both sides. However you need the 6n2 blub holders as the 6n are different.

oh dear!!! what are you talking about????

REAR LIGHTS have to be L.E.D's. they are the bizness!! Dont go for chav lexus ones or the newer 6n2 ones... its about being in 2008 and being up to date.. get l.e.d's.. they will make your car look more modern.. trust me!

Also.. make sure your put sealant on the rear lights, so you dont flood your central locking pump!

Also.. would.. def recomend fleabay.. brought a custom exhaust for £50. brought morrete headlights for £70. brought rear lights for i think £90 (but a year ago or so when they were really new) and also... get the clear crystal side repeaters.. or look at getting the angle eyes of ebay for £120.

Anyway.. good luck with what you do.

you could always get the mark5 clusters, then get the LED upgrade for them that tegwin sells?

Its personal choice at the end of the day.

But my argument is if your trying to make your car look newer by putting 6N2 rear lights...

It is not going to be as spectacular as getting the rear L.E.D lights that i think make the car look much more newer than 6N2 lights will ever do.

But its personal choice, and no one can explain that.

I couldn't have put it better myself.
But what we're looking for here is subtlety 'so the 6n2 seems to be the way to go on this one.
That said 'all suggestions and constructive criticism most welcome :D

Can anybody help me out with this spoiler brake light that isn't working? I've checked the wiring and the fuses 'but a unit seems to be shot.
Any ideas where I might get a replacement from?
I'm not sure how you insert an image but I'll give it a try.
