Spring kits for my 6n

Hey guys,

I want to lower my car but right now I can't afford coilovers until next year so i'm thinking about getting some springs to use until then. I have a few q's that I hope you can answer :)

1. There are many variations of kits out there, what would you recommend and how much is it.
2. I want the lowered look, but I don't want rubbing so what height would you recommend, I thought maybe 40mm?
3. How long do they last and what kind of damage could it do to my original shocks.
4. How hard is it to fit them?

You can get good quality coilies for around £200 so I'd opt to save up just a bit longer for that instead of waisting money on springs if your thinking of changing them in the future. If you'll never change ride height once lowered then save the money and get a shock/spring kit instead.

Regardless, I think you'll need more then a 40mm drop as theres still a big gap between arch and tyre. Furthermore, on polo's it doesn't even look like its been lowered at all on a 40mm drop. I doubt you'd be happy if you want the lowered look and spend cash to find out its not low enough. Ask to see some pics of 6n's dropped 40mm for proof.

If you go for springs and PAY to fit then it'd cost you more on labour then a whole shock/spring kit cos thats straight forward and less work. This makes no difference if your fitting yourself (sorry I can't help with that!).

By lowering the car it'd go through more strain and therefore go through more punishment. By only fitting springs you run the risk of wearing out other suspension parts and paying later to fix them as they're not designed for a lowered stance (extra punishment). Personally i'd opt for a shock/spring kit but also think by lowering no more then 40mm you won't put much stress on the car either. Lower the car more then 40mm and i'd seriously consider a full shock/spring kit.

I would definately go for either springs and shocks, coilovers if you can afford them. Dont go for just springs your original shocks wont last long at all.

Fitting them is fairly simple. You just need to take your time and get all the parts in the right order. If you are fitting springs and shocks or just springs by themself, then you will need spring compressors and basic tools e.g. socket set,axle stands....

As for how much you want to lower the car by i wouldnt bother with 40mm as NOZ said, you wont really see the difference. My 6n is lowered 80mm and doesnt rub at all. Speed bumps on the other hand are a total b***h!! maybe go for a compromise and go for 60mm :D

I wouldn't go any lower than 40mm on standard shocks, it'll destroy them!

And as been previously said, 40mm won't make much of a difference!

Infact a 40mm drop on 195/45/15s only brings a polo back down to earth with the rest of mundane cars. It won't look lowered; I should know cos I had a Pi 40mm shock/spring kit new for £250 only to hate the result and realise it was a waste of cash.

I could try and upload a pic of my old polo to show you what it looks.
