Sub Installed! Doesnt sound too good!!

Hello fellow polo owners..
Just few days ago I got a 12" vibe slr 1200 watts sub installed with a 1000w legacy amp with my standard 9n head unit.
Hi/low adaptor had to be added to the standard head unit so the amp and sub could be worked.
When I say the sub doesnt sound too good by that I mean I get unwanted vibration and the bass doesnt go too well with the music. I think this is due to the fact that I have the standard head unit as I was warned by one of ICE installers that it wouldn't sound satisfactory unless I change my head unit.
So I need to get a head unit and I'm willing to spend upto £200 and I dont mind a used headunit but I want it to give me the best performance. A double din would be most prefered and if theres a good Dvd one for few quids extra then I dont mind.. So throw in your recoomendations please..
I'm also looking to add/change speakers.. was thinking of 6x9's but read a few threads on this forum and not many people seem to like the idea of 6x9? if I get just the new front door speakers with an amp will they be good enough? My car is 3 door.
Need your recommendations asap so I can get it all sorted by next week!
