No mate, would be far too costly and the gearbox is far too weak for this. Obviously it's possible but it isn't really a good idea to be honest.
Would be easier to get a 1.8T engine and wack it in.

I'm not aware of "loads of lupos done" but I know of one lupo that's supercharged with an M45 but that's not the GTi, thats the 100bhp valver.
Have a search around for the 1.8T conversion, been covered in great detail before.

Engine conversion and tuning the 1.6 to a decent level will all cost £1000's. I'm wanting to tune my 1.6 up to around 170bhp, though I need to investigate a way of solving the gearbox woes. I'd be happy spending the money on the car because as an all round package I like it a lot. Anyone can buy a faster car

no not a good idea as the gearbox would not take the strain ov it maybe on a g40. my polo is remapped satge 3 and chipped and its gone thru 3 gearboxes already

It's all well and good stating that 'loads of lupo's have been done'. Fact is that the lupo has a different gearbox (6-speed), which unfortunately although able to take more power, is not interchangeable onto the Polo GTI without a prohibitive amount of money being spent. As already said, look at a a 1.8T conversion if BHP is what you're after, cheaper in the long run!

what about shoving a lupo's engine into the polo gti?
I got no idea on how much the gains would be over the polo engine which is why my question is blunt...

hmmmm there seems to be some misunderstanding on a few things....a 6 speed lupo box will not fit a polo, but just because its a 6 speed and its not on a polo dosnt mean there better at taking more power because there all made to the same spec i.e all that will be different is you will have a extra gear there made with the same internals, you just gain a 6th gear thats all ratios will be slighty different thats it not worth it .....so yes there is a lupo 100hp supercharger with an eaton unit to a 175bhp, the cam cover is the same design so find a pic of it and theres your mounting for it, just because theres no gti's that people know of dosnt mean there not out there you just need to look for them, find the right engerneering company to do the bracketry heck you dont even have to run an intercooler! basically what you would need.....low compression internals in your engine, eaton mounted to your engine with belts in place, intercooler if wanted and some one to map it but it would just be a case of finding some body who can custom map have a look around the forums for him ask him and pm him about it all ask how hard it was etc .....probably does work out slighty cheaper than having a 1.8t but is it reliable ? will you be doing some/most of the work your self, saving money ? will you have bought an engine on an engine stand so you can take your time getting it right or is it going to be, take your engine out and try and get it all done when you have a day off ? are you when its done going to use it as a daily drive ? will it be reliable enough for a daily drive ? will you have the costs to fix it if it does break? a project like this would be better with your car to drive and an engine to one side or take it to a company vw specific like
http://www.mindlandvw.co.uk awsomegti.co.uk ...........hope this helps because doing such a thing you need to ask yourself alot of questions..........and there would be no gain with a lupo engine and there more expensive to buy as an engine to than a polo one !!

Check this out:

You will have to scroll down to see thew charger pics!
Might be a Lupo but esentially the same engine.
I know the gearbox is an issue but if this guy can do it I'm willing to give it a try in the not to distant future.
At any rate it will give you some idea of what's needed to charge the GTi.
It does look like a hell of a lot of work though and probably very very pricey! Hell I like a challenge
