I bought the temperature sensor as recommended:
SteveB wrote:I did mine a few weeks back, got it from GSF.
Part no 93494 - TEMP.SENSOR-4 PIN BLK/YEL £8.50+vat = £9.99

I'll try to get a pic of where it is.
However there is a problem. The sensor I took out looks quite different to it's replacement. :x

Original on the left, replacment on the right.

Could somebody, anybody, confirm which is the correct sensor for my polo?

Did the previous owner put in the wrong sensor, hence it's not working?

Was I told the wrong part to buy?

Have gsf given me the wrong part by mistake?

Or, have VW changed the design of this part?

that's the same one as I put into my car. it definitely had a metal end to it.

how can we confirm that that's the right part? is there a part number stamped on the new part?

Nothing at all. The reciept says gsf no: 93494. uro no: 9-63140 Part no: 6U0-919-501B.

Which one did your old sensor look like? and what model/year is your car?

I went to the local VW dealer and they confirmed it's the right part.
I also bought an O ring for £1.01 from them.

Does the O ring sit on top of the mtal part of the sensor or behind it (on the plastic bit)?

I'm just waiting for the engine to cool down before my second attempt.

Jobs a good'un :D
The temperature gauge is now working. Should this improve my MPG or have any other significant effect on performance?

It may improve performance. It just keeps the engine idling properly and at the correct temperature :P
