Oil Consumption

Right now i know this may have been covered before as ive had a look through the search.
IMO my car seems to be drinking oil

. No leaks drips etc, its being used/burnt. No smoke when you plant your foot. 1.4 16 btw.
A litre/1000 miles give or take. Now ive poped down to VW and they say that this is perfectly acceptable.
In the user manual according to the man 1litre/1000km's (600miles) is even acceptable
TBH i find this completely unacceptable. I mean WTF cant the germans build engines with decent tolerances anymore
Anyone with similar experiences?

Right, my 2000MY 2.8 V6 Passat 4motion, just loves oil - so I just treat it as and when it feels the urge! Maybe anywhere between 0.5 litre 500 - 1500 miles, extended high constant speeds brings out the need for oil - annoying on long journeys (need to carry extra oil for top-ups) My wife's 1.4 16V Polo SE does like a drop of oil now and again - more like 0.5 litre every 4000 miles. Look at it this way, would you rather a VW with a slight addiction to oil - so less engine wear(??) or a Ford that does not use a drop. Just remember Jags and Rolls use oil as well - now does that not make you feel better!!
Update - I take it from your sig that you have the 100ps engine, I am talking about the 75ps BBY engine.

Tbh i bought a VW because of the quality and marque, this is not what i was suspecting

.
If VW are telling me the truth they are basically saying that these cars need 10 litres of oil between services

. Im sorry but thats horse s**t.
Im fairly sure the engine code for my engine is BBZ

my TDI needed a big top up recently.
can anyone pinpoint exactly what oil consumption means? maybe it's not actually that bad a thing.
i know the honda v-tecs also can drink a lot of oil.

I'm afraid that I also moved to VW for similar reasons, my 2000MY Passat is good as it is just a load of old superceded Audi parts, so quality is where it should be (but by default), my wife's 2002MY Polo 9N on the other hand is average quality for this market internally, but where it counts, ie chassis and running gear, it is diabolical - which is what you could expect as these parts are all Skoda design and manufacture. I was stupid enough not to consider this back in 2002, in fact I really wanted my wife to get another Fiesta but she chose the Polo - oh and the rust resistance is not what I would expect either. In general I think that VW is just the same as BMW and MB - they are all living on their past good name earned by supplying reasonable cars, until Jo Public walks away (but to where?) en mass, this is all we deserve to get for our money.
On the oil consumption, I'm wishing that I bought 15 litres of oil when I bought it to change the Passat oil - I only bought 10 litres and the Passat takes 5.5 litres - so it will be touch and go for the next 10,000 miles.
BBZ engine, I think that this is okay as it was the A*** engines that mainly had the piston ring problems.

I'm not too sure generally, but VW did start to include "top-up" kits in some of their TDI engines - and it was not only because of the difficulty in finding variable service type oil - originally it was only Halfords that stocked it (Castrol) in small containers - a very odd situation indeed! If I were you, I'd do as I did and accept that top-ups will be needed, and buy one of these pouches on ebay so that you can use the oil as and when the car needs it. Check oil + water + brake fluid + tyres once a week, that way you will never get a fright (mainly its in the operators handbook).

so your saying that between services (going on 10,000miles) my car should use 10 litres? Behave. Thats not a top up. A top up is a litre over 10k miles imo.
I cant believe that anyone else finds this unacceptible

Oh no no no, but maybe up to a couple of litres between oil changes - wrt other cars even that seems outrageous.

Well I think that this has been a problem for VAG for so long now that they issued a standard international way of defining how to accurately measure the oil usage - but this is no help to those people who know their cars are too greedy.

but it cant be a problem across the entire VAG range. No-one would buy their cars.
And besides my mums 1.2 polo doesnt drink a drop of oil
