Thinking about a Polo for a first car

Hi,

I'm 35, male and am learning to drive (finally! :D), so I'm now looking at which car to buy first. I want something reliable that is relatively cheap to run and have pretty much decided on a VAG car of some sort specifically Polo, Ibiza or Fabia. I'm intending on a budget of around £3000 and I'd like to get something around a 2001/2 car which should be doable :)

Now, What car? state that a 1.2 S 5dr. I've been told that a 1.4 petrol or 1.9 tdi would be ideal. What do you all think?

I definitely want aircon if I can get it, especially for summer

Thanks,
Luke.

Welcome to the forum mate. The polo is a grand choice!

I'm not sure how popular the air con unit is/was on lower spec models, if it was an option at all!!

The polo is a great little car, great fuel economy, great looks and reliable.

When browsing, look out for noises in the gearbox and a creaky pedal box.

I'd go for a 2001 1.4 TDI in at least SE spec 8)

If you're looking at a 1.2 S, then it's the mk6 you are looking at.

The 1.2 8v is very very poor, and the 1.2 12v is only 65bhp, but is in fact slower than 1.4 8v mk5.
If you intend on going quicker than 40mph, then I'd recommend going for the 1.4 16v sport (100bhp). The mk5 came with air-con, not 100% sure on the mk6.
The insurance will also be cheap, relative to your age, plus a friend of mine got insured in his first year of driving on one as a name driver for only 600 quid!

That's one of my friend's Burna's TDI. It's just a 1.4 3-pot TDI, with a tuning box.
Surprisingly torque from standstill.

Is that a custom intercooler/radiator he has on the front?

i think as it will be your first car, and you therefore have no no-claims bonus, then i would think a mk6 1.4tdi should suit you fine!
as far as i remember, they do come with air-con in the higher spec models (i think Dino on here had it in his polo), plus due to the engine size and the emissions, it falls in the cheaper tax band of £35 per year i do believe :D
