Mayo!

Guys,

I was polishing the rocker cover when I opened the cap to find the dreaded mayo like substance on the cap, I'm pretty sure this is signs of a HGF. The car itself runs absolutely fine and has no other symptoms of the head gasket blowing but it's there nether the less :(

Is there much chance of the whole lot going soon? It was only serviced about a month ago :?

Anyone else got the same?

Could be HGF, but it could also be the car just needs a good run. Lots of short runs build up the mayo on the cap (especially if you have the heater on as well). Are you losing antifreeze mixture or have oil in it, or water in your oil? I find both my wife's & my Polos' tend to mayo up in the cooler months, but goes away with the warmer weather. If you're not losing antifreeze, I don't think your head gasket is shot. HTH.

It's not loosing anything, it's just there. Its only 3 miles to work every day and the previous owner did the same so it's not been thrashed out or done lots of motorway miles. The oil dipstick is fine and oil in there is fine it's just on the underside of the cap. Can't say i've come across it but only heard about it because my dad owns a lotus with a k-series rover, notorious for HGF.

Daz mate, i had the same problem. It's all down to short journeys apparently - All i did was a put a flush through the system, clear out all the airbox and replaced parts of the oil system (seperator and breather). Occasionally check the breather for signs of it happening again but the flush seems to have done the trick. It may be worth pulling it off the airbox and checking, and if its bad (mine was horrendous!) replace/clean it, and check the oil seperator too. Worth sorting out as my MPG and response was awful!

Hope that Helps!

the breather pipes on these engines tend to block up with sludge and it gets blown up into the rocker cover! its nothing to worry about unless you loose coolent.
