scraping noises

whenever i press the clutch in theres a fairly loud scraping noise, however its also there when im driving along in gear all be it a bit quieter. if i put it in neutral, let the clutch off and coast along its silent.

gearbox doesnt seem too bad, no gears are difficult to select and theres no real whining noises that are worth worrying about, never pops out of gear.

does this sound like i need a new clutch? the scraping when im in gear driving along being a release bearing problem?

Depends what sort of scraping noise...

It could possibly be a trashed release bearing...

Or, the slider that the release bearing sits on might have snapped.....seems to be a common issue,...

If you are sure the noise is comming from inside the clutch area, im afraid the gearbox will have to come out...

You dont neceserily need a new clutch though, you can just buy the release bearing if its gone prematurley!

ahh flaps

might aswell just get a sachs clutch kit and get the gearbox oil done while its all out, 2 birds with one stone and all that.

any further input would be great, and cheers for that tegwin :)

Had this exact same problem mate. And it was my release bearing. I had a new clutch on Monday and it's all smooth and sorted now 8)

Make SURE you check the release slider bolted to the front of the gearbox very very carefully for cracks when you take it appart....

They have a nasty habit of cracking and making all sorts of weird noises on this gearbox!

When I did my clutch, mine was totaly chewed up and totaly detached from the box!

update on this...

got the new sachs clutch kit fitted. Release bearing, the slider and the bracket that holds the slider on were foobarred, totally mashed. Gear change is now silky smooth and the clutch light as a feather but...

the scraping noise is still there

it happens when in gear, coasting along in gear or accellerating. If i press the clutch it goes, if i put it in neutral and coast it goes. Its a definate metallic grinding sound, cant be wheel bearings or it would be there all the time. Mechanic said the gearbox oil was spotless when he took it all out and replaced it, plus theres no whining so i think the box is ok.

any ideas anyone? can driveshafts make these kind of noises if broken?

All symptons would suggest gearbox, but if the garage checked it and said it was fine then i dunno :?
