Worn tappets or camshaft at a guess.
Easiest way to tell if tappets are defected is get a mechanic with a filler to check if the clearance is more than 0.2mm between the cam and tappet head (whilst the cylinder is upright position), if so then tappets are worn/deffected.

Initaly i would say tappits but these engines make a light TICK noise and if it was worn on the surface, the temperature wouldnt effect it.
Piston slap is common on these engines, but thats usualy louder when cold and goes when warm, or at least quietens down. thats more of a rattly knock.
Cant really think what it would be other than something to do with the belts or aux components such as alternator bearings etc..

its definatly cuming from the top end it sounds like a injector to wards the rear of the block
are they tappetrs on this engine or are they lifters ?
could the wrong oil be causing this as well
also ive been told to clean the oil pipe in the sump it has mesh on ??

They are hydralic lifters, Four things will cause them to tap. Wear to the surface of the cam lobe, Wear to the lifter face, Blocked oil ways and lifter failure. All of which will cause a tapping **More so when cold** So ... im almost certain lifters wouldnt be the cause.
However.. Injectors do make a ticking noise, which can be very noise, especialy if the injectors are a little worn.

Injector valves are part number for
AEE, AHS: 032 906 031 A
For all other engines: 030 906 031 E
Not sure how you would test them, I'd do it the stupid way and run the starter with the sparks off and see if they squirt. But theres probably another better way like a multimeter.
Edit: Haynes says test the resistance, it should be 1.2 to 1.6 ohms at 15c-30c
