A guy where I live has a Fiesta Zetec S and I took him out for a spin in mine... He said mine fealt quite a bit faster... Don't know if he was just being nice or not because we've never had a friendly tussle on the roads...
I'd have thought you should have been able to get away from him in your GTi.
To be honest I'm unsure of the specs of the Zetec S. I don't think it has as much BHP as the GTi, but then again, I suspect it's probably a bit lighter.
Not that I'm condoning street racing or driving above the speed limit or anything!

102 Bhp, 107lb ft torque and a stated top speed of 115 mph its just a Fiesta(old shape may i add becuase they are EVEN LIGHTER)
plus its a Ford block engine and they pull very well, and remember its pulling a body that is A LOT lighter than the safe VW Polo. in the Zetec S ABS was a £300 option to "make it lighter" so make of that what u will. Talk to Scorpio about this, he had a Zetec S and now he has a 9n TDi.
quick note:
Zetec S Power to weight (bhp/tonne) 106
Polo GTi 6n2 Power to weight(bhp/tonne) 117
blame your tyres mate, never underestimate the value of tyres and time of day as well as condition of the road, I can go on forever about the reasons for why he might of had one on you that particular time but remember
the Zetec S aint a VW

I dusted one yesterday easily you you shouldn't of had a problem.
He was staying in the right hand lane for no reason so I pulled alongside at the next set of lights and said bye bye, he put up a good effort though!
I'd be a little worried about the glowing red manifold if I was you!

how long were you at 110mph?! is that near the red line?

I've had mine cruising at 115-125mph for about 5 mins with no problems
(was attempting to keep up with my mates Civic Type-R but failed miserably, he kept slowing down so I could catch up and then 'bye bye baby' he was gone again!)
THE ABOVE HAPPENED IN GERMANY OFFICER

The IVTEC Type R engine is a beast of an engine. The best self aspirated 2.0 around in my view, chucks out a mean 197 bhp and imagine that with a turbo!! The Japs have theirs at 250bhp instead of the "toned down" 197bhp. Still...... more than enough!

I would be very worried about the glowing manifold too mate, unless you were at 110 for ages.
The max speed of the GTi is meant to be 127, so you shouldn't have been too near the redline.
Maybe you've got a blocked cat? or silencer??

i'd guess that after giving a car a bit of a thrashing at high speed for a while its best to ease off gradually, if you had stopped straight away then there will be no cooling airflow and the engine's gonna have to lose that heat somewhere... although glowing red sounds a bit worrying!! - maybe dont drive at 110?

well i did give it some! its hard to get the pulling off right! low revs crap start of too much spin like mad! with haven no esp to help out on racein starts i think thats wear the z-tecs had one on me! but the glowing red mannifold did worry me lot i mean at that kind of temp me polo could drop a valve! BANG!

Has any one know of the back box valve going wrong and not opening when the VVT cuts in?

5000 RPM! I dont know what to do? I mean do i get a new back box or do all polos get that hot when given them some hammer?

I'd take your car to the dealers or a specialist and tell them about your red manifold incident (don't tell them you were going over the speed limit though!!) and see what they say.
The VVT changes over between 3750 and 4800 rpm (you'll see a dip in the torque curve between these figures.
So over 4800 your valves are opening more.
Woohoo Dont you just love toasting 2 Litres?

Not sure how you guys rally your motors about, but i havent lost a race yet !
Ive toasted :
loads of saxo's (dont u just hate the people that drive them they think there so cool!)
loads of BMW's, 1.8ltrs
Loads of Fiesta Zetec's
Loads of 2ltr nova's (modded)
Ive even whipped a 2.5 ltr (auto) BMW hahah
toasted every new 1.8ltr MGF that ive seen on the road
Just seems no matter who i race, my car just keeps pulling. Ive even done 132mph 4 UP !!!!! racing a 330 BMW on the A127 !! ok i lost but it was worth the look on his face when i overtook him (he obviously eased off) at 132mph with loads of bodies in the car bouncing around haha
I think ive been a bit lucky with my car, it just seems to be a quick one, and i havent changed anything on it yet.. . been trying to get a chip for it, but alas Superchips say that still havent had all the ECU details from VW, so they cant make one yet. . very annoying.
Anyone else know of a place to get a chip for my gti ?

Just enquired about a REVO upgrade to my GTI at JBS and they say that it's not possible, only for turbo versions...
Well that idea's been binned!
