Service/Cam Belt Question.

Right, so my GTI is due for a service at the end of the month. Having only had the car a month or so I looked through the service book to see what was previously done.
Thing is, I can't see a tick next to any of the "toothed belt changed". The car has done nearly 80k and seeing as all the stamps are at VW I thought this would have been done already?
I know it sounds silly, but could it just be a case that they forgot to tick the box? I would have thought VW would have changed this at around 60k or something? The car appears to have been serviced every 10k.
Any help would be apprechiated.

I had a similar dilema recently.
The best thing for you to do it ring the dealer whom completed the 40k service (as this is the cambelt change mileage) and ask them what work they carried out. They will tell you if a cambelt was done.
If they say no, then change it! its around £130 for the cambelt kit from VW or around £350-£400 for VW to complete a cambelt change.

Sounds a great idea, so do they keep that kind of stuff on file?

Yes they should have details still of the service work carried out.
I contacted a dealer who compelted a service in 2004 on mine and they still had the details.
Good luck

From memory the cam belts should be done every 40,000 miles so you will be due to have the belts changed anytime now, would also advise the water pump to be changed at the same time, going to do all mine next weekend

You can buy a kit for about £80 which includes everything! both belts, both tensioners and idlers, you should really change the lot as it is the plastic on the tensioners that splits, drops off then $ha66$ everything, you can also get exchange water pumps from vw for about £25, its just not worth the risk to not change the lot
