central locking problem

Hi there
I`ve got a problem with the central locking on my 1999 1.9sdi estate.
The central locking works intermitantly . The problem is not just one door. When it fails neither door will operate the C/L. One annoying problem is when it occurs I cant open the petrol flap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .
Any ideas

Common problem on the mk4. The pump fails after a while but it doesnt always go straight away. If you go into your boot the pump is located over the right and side as you look into your boot. On the same side there is a lever that you can pull to manually release the locked flap. Id just take the pump out and give a whack (technical speak) and it will probably start working again.

Welcome to Central Locking Hell :)

We've all been there and all replaced that hehe. Best bet mate, get a new one off ebay, just get a Golf Mk3 one works fine. Can get them for like £15-30. The problem is that the polo a water leak into the Central Locking Pump, im guessing from the lights, shoddy eh?

I dont really think theres anything you can do to fix this either, other than change ur central locking to electric with a kit off ebay and thats a ball ache to do

thanks for the quick replies

Took Biddles "technical" advice and gave it a good whack seems to have done the trick- for now at least- thanks mate.

sweet money saver ftw :)
if it starts to go again just check your circuit board on it, and ur connector pins. If its like a moldy blue green water defo has gotten to it :(

Yeah, my connectors to the unit is mouldy/oxidised. :(
Does that mean I need a new unit? Or can I just clean it and at worst maybe buy a new connector/wire cluster?

About that solution... great! At least I can refuel... for a moment there I thought I had to drive my car til there was no petrol and buy a new car LOL

And taking out the pump, does that fix the whole central locking problem? and do I just pull out the blue pipe from the pump?
