removing a locking nut without the socket....

heres one that will test ur brains. i had 4 locking bolts on my car aand the socket that gets them of was breaking so thought id get them of befor it broke totally, problem is i got 3 of but it broke when i was trying to get the fourth one out. i originally got the bolts from halfords and cause of the shape of them theyre not all that easy to get out if n e one has them you'll know wat i mean........
i tried drilling it but its to tough and i tried gluing the socket onto it but it didnt work either......
any ideas?

Have you spoke to halfords. The set probably come with a code for the socket and they may be able to order a new one in.

depernding on wot there like i had the same problem on my mums car a few years bk
hammered an impact socket on to it and it undid it that way took some gettign it out of teh socket afterwards thow

both cunning ideas....
i did wonder if halfords could help, might try the wacking the socket onto it first then trying it that way and if that dont works after some more swearing, try halfords and see wat they say.

i tried baileysufc idea on hammering a socket onto it and it worked perfectly, was as easy as a knife through warm butter. but as u said getting the nut out the socket is a different story but im glad i got it out now so i can relower it more and sort it out.

i evetually got mine out with the press at work but if u have a vice put teh socket init with the thead facign down and put punch or if u ant got one a old bolth throw the hole and wack it with a hammer cums out eventually if u dnt wanny just throw it away

Hammering the socket onto the locking nut is an old wheel thief trick.
Apparently the cheaper the socket the better as it is more likely to split etc over the socket.

theres a lesson then, if u seen some nice wheels on a car, dont buy them steel them
now u know how to sort the locking bolts out.
baileysufc, once again, so obvious but to obvious for me. i do have a vice, wooden and a metal one and i put the bolt in the vice and thought how the hell am i gonna do this? but now u said it i gotta put the socket in the vice not the bolt and whack it through the hole.

Just for the record, if theres no key, the most common ways I know to sort this is the old hammering socket trick - which often ruins your alloys. Or to get someone to weld another nut onto the back of it.

sorry mate ur a bit late......
thats the way i did it tho and did it about 5 days or so ago..
however i didnt ruin my alloy, i did by trying other ways but not this way and i got it of easily. used a 18mm socket and just hit it on as hard as i could and it wokred a treat.
