Just went to my local garage today to confirm what i was dreading. Yep, looks like my box is on the way out.

I want to take it to a specialist for a second oppinion when I find one, just to be sure. But it's not looking good!

Unsure of which route to go down at the moment, factory box is just so out of my price range at present, it'll take me a while to get there.

So in the mean time if anyone can recommend any decent gearbox specialists in the South West area that would be great, just the keep my options open.

As said above...dont just get a "recon box"

BUT..

Deffinately take your gearbox to a proper gearbox rebuilder and get YOUR box rebuilt.....

That way you know where all the parts came from etc...

Had mine done, and so far...so good!

Anyone know how much a factory box is by any chance? A price without fitting?

How many miles is that Tim? That's 4 months since I noticed a noise and the car is still going fine

It only has to deal with about 8 break camel power, so its not under much stress :D

Yeh i'm either going with the factory box, which I heard is around 1.1k with exchange for mine.

Or get mine reconditioned. I'll have to see what this area has to offer, and what can I afford.

Tegwin where did you get yours done, and how much did it cost if you don't mind me asking?

Mouse - I'm on 48K IIRC.

I'd agree with that. Having your box rebuilt may mean a slightly longer down time, however you know the history of it.
Don't leave it too long tho', as better to get it rebuilt whilst its still working than giving the reconditioners a near enough scrap box they cannot rebuild 4 ya!

Tim I would give New Inn Gearbox Center a ring. They are located in Pontypool, sorted my car out for me before I was pleased with the service.
Worth asking them though. Every garage I had been to had told me it was gear box or drive shaft causing my problem but they found that the flywheel was knackered.
Just a thought.
